The come in two packages, one is deciduous (temporary) while the other permanent set. Puppies have 28 deciduous teeth while we humans have 42. The four classification of teeth types are – molar, canine, premolar and incisor. Usually, dogs have the permanent set of teeth by 6 months.

The Usual suspects (common dental issues):
As humans age we need more care towards our dental hygiene and the same goes the dogs. The hygiene follow-up on dental grounds matters but the fun fact is that if the dental needs are catered the inside of the dog’s mouth isn’t need to be catered. Their tongue and saliva take care of it by themselves. Below mentioned issues are the ones that crop up most of the time.
• Persisting deciduous (temporary) tooth
• Plaque and calculus (tartar) formation
• Gingivitis
• Periodontitis
• Dental caries

On an average of 70% of the dogs over the age of 3 years end up having loosened teeth, gum swelling and discoloration teeth (mentioned in the above issues). Apart from an annual check-up at the vet having the teeth cleaned 3-4 times a week would keep the dogs away from heart and kidney diseases.

Solutions:

For instance, the toothpaste we use does not work for our pets and to overcome this issue a specially manufactured toothpaste is readily available in the market. Same goes with the the tooth-brush.
